Blown glass beads are still used today in the world of clothing and headwear, a fact that can also be admired at the exceptional and unique exhibition at the Liebieg Palace

What a gorgeous bonnet!

Krkonoše pearls on festive folk costumes

Folk costumes and glass? Although they may seem like two completely different worlds, they have always been closely intertwined. Lightweight blown glass beads are an integral part of traditional headwear—girls’ headbands and wreaths, men’s hats, and majestic wedding crowns. At the exhibition, you will discover the most ceremonial elements of folk attire, worn only on special occasions such as feasts, religious celebrations, or weddings. Hundreds of glass beads sparkle on all of them, across regions—in addition to Bohemia and Moravia, you’ll see parts of costumes from Slovakia and Germany, as well as special glass beads for Kosovo or Ecuador. Folk costumes have always reflected the wealth of the region in which they originated.

Will you be more captivated by the simple Podještědí costume or one of the opulent Moravian ones? Come see for yourself!

You can visit the exhibition at the Johann Gallery from August 25 to October 31, 2026 (opening on Monday, August 24, at 2 p.m.).
