The Children's Glass Symposium in Kamenický Šenov culminated in an exhibition in Liberec
The third annual YGS (Young Glass Symposium) Children’s Glass Symposium culminated on Sunday, June 21, 2026, with a festive opening reception at MUZA | North Bohemian Museum in Liberec. The exhibition showcases original glass objects created by talented children from across the Czech Republic and will run through August 31.
The symposium took place from June 18 to 21 in Kamenický Šenov and Nový Bor. Fourteen talented students from elementary art schools, aged 5 to 15, were selected through an art competition. The theme of this year’s event was “The Realm of Dreams,” which offered the young artists space for imagination, unique stories, and unexpected artistic solutions.
Over the course of several days, the children gained hands-on experience working with glass. Under the guidance of instructors from the Secondary School of Applied Arts for Glassmaking in Kamenický Šenov and professional glassmakers, they worked in studios as well as at the companies Preciosa Lighting, Antares Art, and Novotný Glass. They were introduced to a wide range of techniques—from glassblowing and hand-shaping to cutting, painting, and sandblasting, all the way to creating glass mosaics.
For most participants, this was their first experience with a real glassmaking operation. In addition to practical skills, they also gained valuable experience and the opportunity to consult with experts on their designs. The result is original artwork that, according to the organizers, often reaches a level comparable to that of adult artists.
Fashion designer and educator Liběna Rochova served as the symposium’s ambassador again this year, personally supporting and inspiring the young artists. A wide range of partners, institutions, and individuals contributed to the event, including the Liberec Region, the North Bohemian Museum, and the teaching staff of the glassmaking school. School Director Jakub Jelínek and David Sobotka played key roles.
The exhibition at the Liberec Museum is part of the Crystal Valley Week festival program. Visitors can view it free of charge through August 31, 2026. The accompanying program will also feature a guided tour with Jakub Jelínek, scheduled for August 27 at 3:00 p.m.
The YGS Children’s Glass Symposium has thus once again confirmed the importance of supporting young talent and the future of the Czech glassmaking craft. We are proud that the exhibition is part of Crystal Valley Week, the largest glass festival in the Czech Republic.
